Per otto anni sull'uccisione di Giancarlo Siani, avvenuta il 23 settembre del 1985, cala il silenzio. Il movente è "chiaro" fin dall'inizio, molto scomodo individuarlo davvero. A quarant'anni da uno dei più efferati delitti mafiosi avvenuti in Italia, questo libro è un contributo alla memoria da parte di chi ha lavorato in via Cosenza n. 13, a Castellammare di Stabia, la stessa redazione del Mattino dove ha operato Siani.

Corre l'anno del Signore 1794, e Parigi - un tempo capitale di lumi e fasti - arde ora nel rogo delle sue stesse contraddizioni. Le strade odorano di sangue rappreso e pece bruciata, i canti di libertà sono soffocati dal gemito di madri e dalla ruggine delle lame che calano regolarmente sul patibolo della Place de la Révolution. Il Terrore, orchestrato da Robespierre e i suoi seguaci, si è fatto legge, e le virtù rivoluzionarie sono divenute scudo e spada d'una nuova tirannide.

Bond markets differ in one fundamental aspect from standard stock markets. While the latter are built up to a finite number of trade assets, the underlying basis of a bond market is the entire term structure of interest rates: an infinite-dimensional variable which is not directly observable. On the empirical side, this necessitates curve-fitting methods for the daily estimation of the term structure. Pricing models, on the other hand, are usually built upon stochastic factors representing the term structure in a finite-dimensional state space. Written for readers with knowledge in mathematical finance (in particular interest rate theory) and elementary stochastic analysis, this research monograph has threefold aims: to bring together estimation methods and factor models for interest rates, to provide appropriate consistency conditions and to explore some important examples.

The growing number of published works dedicated to global environmental change leads to the realization that protection of the natural environment has become an urgent problem. The question of working out principles of co­ evolution of man and nature is being posed with ever-increasing persistence. Scientists in many countries are attempting to find ways of formulating laws governing human processes acting on the environment. Numerous national and international programs regarding biosphere and climate studies contribute to the quest for means of resolving the conflict between human society and nature. However, attempts to find efficient methods of regulating human activity on a global scale encounter principal difficulties. The major difficulty is the lack of an adequate knowledge base pertaining to climatic and biospheric processes as wen as the largely incomplete state of the databases concerning global processes occurring in the atmosphere, in the ocean, and on land. Another difficulty is the inability of modern science to formulate the requirements which must be met by the global databases necessary for reliable evaluation of the state of the environ­ ment and fore casting its development for sufficiently long time intervals.

There is a need to solve problems in solid and fluid mechanics that currently exceed the resources of current and foreseeable supercomputers. The issue revolves around the number of degrees of freedom of simultaneous equations that one needs to accurately describe the problem, and the computer storage and speed limitations which prohibit such solutions. The goals of tHis symposium were to explore some of the latest work being done in both industry and academia to solve such extremely large problems, and to provide a forum for the discussion and prognostication of necessary future direc­ tions of both man and machine. As evidenced in this proceedings we believe these goals were met. Contained in this volume are discussions of: iterative solvers, and their application to a variety of problems, e.g. structures, fluid dynamics, and structural acoustics; iterative dynamic substructuring and its use in structural acoustics; the use of the boundary element method both alone and in conjunction with the finite element method; the application of finite difference methods to problems of incompressible, turbulent flow; and algorithms amenable to concurrent computations and their applications. Furthermore, discussions of existing computational shortcomings from the big picture point of view are presented that include recommendations for future work.
