Hybrid Dynamical Systems: Controller and Sensor Switching Problems

Hybrid Dynamical Systems: Controller and Sensor Switching Problems by Andrey V. Savkin , Robin J. Evans
    English | PDF | 2002 | 158 Pages | ISBN : 0817642242 | 10.8 MB

This book is primarily a research monograph that presents in a unified man ner some recent research on a class of hybrid dynamical systems (HDS). The book is intended both for researchers and advanced postgraduate stu dents working in the areas of control engineering, theoretical computer science, or applied mathematics and with an interest in the emerging field of hybrid dynamical systems. The book assumes competence in the basic mathematical techniques of modern control theory. The material presented in this book derives from a period of fruitful research collaboration between the authors that began in 1994 and is still ongoing. Some of the material contained herein has appeared as isolated results in journal papers and conference proceedings. This work presents this material in an integrated and coherent manner and also presents many new results. Much of the material arose from joint work with students and colleagues, and the authors wish to acknowledge the major contributions made by Ian Petersen, Efstratios Skafidas, Valery Ugrinovskii, David Cook, Iven Mareels, and Bill Moran. There is currently no precise definition of a hybrid dynamical system; however, in broad terms it is a dynamical system that involves a mixture of discrete-valued and continuous-valued variables. Since the early 1990s, a bewildering array of results have appeared under the umbrella of HDS, ranging from the analysis of elementary on-off control systems to sophis ticated mathematical logic-based descriptions of large real-time software systems.

This volume is a textbook for a year-long graduate level course in All research universities have applied mathematics for scientists and engineers. such a course, which could be taught in different departments, such as mathematics, physics, or engineering. I volunteered to teach this course when I realized that my own research students did not learn much in this course at my university. Then I learned that the available textbooks were too introduc tory. While teaching this course without an assigned text, I wrote up my lecture notes and gave them to the students. This textbook is a result of that endeavor. When I took this course many, many, years ago, the primary references were the two volumes of P. M. Morse and H. Feshbach, Methods of Theoretical Physics (McGraw-Hill, 1953). The present text returns the contents to a similar level, although the syllabus is quite different than given in this venerable pair of books.

The series Advances in Industrial Control aims to report and encourage technology transfer in control engineering. The rapid development of control technology has an impact on all areas of the control discipline. New theory, new controllers, actuators, sensors, new industrial processes, computer methods, new applications, new philosophies … , new challenges. Much of this development work resides in industrial reports, feasibility study papers and the reports of advanced collaborative projects. The series offers an opportunity for researchers to present an extended exposition of such new work in all aspects of industrial control for wider and rapid dissemination. The Advances in Industrial Control series promotes control techniques, which are used by industry. The series has useful volumes in various aspects of proportional-integral-derivative (PID) control because of the widespread use of PID in applications. Predictive control is another technique that quickly became essential in some sectors of the petro-chemical, and process control industries. It was the ability of the method to incorporate operational constraints that lead to this take-up by industry. The wider industrial applications of predictive control has been slower to develop; indeed some practitioners might argue that this technology transfer step is still active or had only just begun in some industrial sectors.

Geometric Method for Stability of Non-Linear Elastic Thin Shells by Jordanka Ivanova , Franco Pastrone
    English | PDF | 2002 | 252 Pages | ISBN : 0792375246 | 28.8 MB

PREFACE This book deals with the new developments and applications of the geometric method to the nonlinear stability problem for thin non-elastic shells. There are no other published books on this subject except the basic ones of A. V. Pogorelov (1966,1967,1986), where variational principles defined over isometric surfaces, are postulated, and applied mainly to static and dynamic problems of elastic isotropic thin shells. A. V. Pogorelov (Harkov, Ukraine) was the first to provide in his monographs the geometric construction of the deformed shell surface in a post-critical stage and deriving explicitely the asymptotic formulas for the upper and lower critical loads. In most cases, these formulas were presented in a closed analytical form, and confirmed by experimental data. The geometric method by Pogorelov is one of the most important analytical methods developed during the last century. Its power consists in its ability to provide a clear geometric picture of the postcritical form of a deformed shell surface, successfully applied to a direct variational approach to the nonlinear shell stability problems. Until now most Pogorelov's monographs were written in Russian, which limited the diffusion of his ideas among the international scientific community. The present book is intended to assist and encourage the researches in this field to apply the geometric method and the related results to everyday engineering practice.
