After going through many battles with each of these characters, we care for their plight, root for them to win and learn more about them so that they are not just soldiers, but real people with personality and history. To be able to accomplish this while keeping the story moving briskly takes balance and skill. The battlefield humor under fire is also welcome, as a temporary buffer from the grim proceedings they are trying to survive. I enjoyed the historical parallels to the original battle of Gettysburg in 1863 as well.
I found this book to be quite surprising in the different twists the story went though and the creative ways each side tried to outsmart the other. The history of Mary and her ties to the Amish Zone also proved to be quite pivotal in their usage here, sharing more elements with the original Pennsylvania Omnibus. Both this story and the PA omnibus also feature some illustrations by Ben Adams at the chapter breaks, highlighting the gritty realism that this world embodies and making for a more cohesive universe overall.
