A set of tales from both inmate and guard, Whispering Birches relates their experience of the murderous Auschwitz camp. The story recounts SS guard Kristian Wolff's increasing realization of the camp's evil. Provoked by feelings for Elena Prikaznova, a Jewess who sang her way into his heart, he increasingly treats the inmates as a family to protect. Despite original repugnance, Elena relents to desire in the face of Kristian's acts of compassion and bravery, including the dramatic rescue of her sister. Through fraternization, Kristian is increasingly under Gestapo scrutiny and their outcome is uncertain. Whispering Birches uncovers the harrowing reality of the camp, whilst providing human insight into this epic struggle.
