Excerpts from WWII from a Tank's Open Turret Hatch…

"We landed on Utah Beach and fought with [General Patton's] 5th Infantry Division in the hedge-rows of Normandy, the drive across France, and at Metz and Fort Driant. From there we went into the Siegfried Line at Saarlautern, Germany, fighting house-to-house."

Attacking Fort Driant: "Usually, I never closed my turret hatch since I had a greater fear of becoming disoriented and getting lost and captured than I did of death. But with all of the incoming artillery, we had to keep our hatch closed and couldn't get out of the tank. This barrage of enemy artillery went on for the five days we were in the fort. We never left our tank."

After the Battle of the Bulge: "From that point on, the battles are foggy in my mind. It was one town after another, one tank battle after another, snow and bitter cold. We provided tank support while negotiating rough ground, dense woods, and deep snow. We captured more than thirty towns."
