The National Park Service was created in 1916 by Congress through the National Park Service Organic Act. It was signed into law on August 25th by President Woodrow Wilson. It is an agency of the U.S. Dept. of the Interior. The direct management of the NPS is directed by the National Park Service Director, who is confirmed by the Senate. The NPS employs over 22,000 people that oversee 397 units, of which 58 are national parks. The National Park System includes; Military Parks, National Preserves, National Monuments, Historic and Heritage Sites, Wild Rivers, Recreation Areas, National Memorials, National Seashores and Lakeshores, Scenic Trails, Islands and Wolf Trap National Park (the first national park for the performing arts). Yellowstone National Park was the first national park in the United States. The park system encompasses approximately 84.4 million acres, of which more than 4.3 million acres are in private ownership. The largest park is Wrangell-St. Elias National Park and Preserve in Alaska, covering 16 percent of the entire park system.
