Free History BONUS Inside! On September 17th, 1862, US President Abraham Lincoln got the great victory he had desired ever since the outbreak of the American Civil War over a year before. Declaring victory would give him the political breathing space he needed to do something that he had been pondering for some time—freeing the slaves. The great victory Lincoln wanted took place near Antietam Creek in Maryland, near the town of Sharpsburg. The Union called it “The Battle of Antietam,” and the Confederacy referred to it as “The Battle of Sharpsburg.” It is known by both today, but “Antietam” is the more common usage. The thing about the Battle of Antietam was that it wasn’t really a victory for either side. It was more like a bloody stalemate, except for the fact that the troops of the North remained near the battlefield while the rebels moved to a position that was more suited for defense. While the battle certainly was not the resounding victory Lincoln had hoped for, he was a very astute politician. If his troops were still on the field and the enemy was not, he won. Privately, though, Lincoln was both angered and horrified by the results of the battle, or rather the lack of them.
