    Africa: the Berlin conference had only recognized the colonies of Angola and Mozambique, but Portugal claimed all the territory that united them, the region known as Zambeziland, by the river Zambezi, which crosses it. Already five years ago, Britain had succeeded in having Bechuanaland recognized as its protectorate (although it was expanding: a few months later it would annex the northernmost region indicated on the map), and Cecil Rhodes was obtaining concessions from the indigenous chiefs in Zambeziland. This put Portugal in conflict with Britain. In defense of its claims, Portugal tried to gain the support of Germany, claiming that a third power was needed to isolate the German colonies from the British to avoid a conflict between two great powers. However, Germany did not want to confront Britain and did not support Portugal, nor did the Republic of South Africa
