There is a story told in which Giorgione and Titian once argued in Heaven over which had painted a certain masterpiece. The two geniuses, after debating -at length, proposed the only sensible solution. "We'll ask Berenson',' they said in unison, and thereby ended the dispute. This apocryphal story underlines— if ever so humorously—the authority which Bernard Berenson commanded in the 20th-century art world. His judgments determined the major purchases of Medieval and Renaissance art by almost every museum in the world. This collection of eight famous essays brings the light of his scholarship to some neglected figures of early Byzantine and Medieval art. His evaluation of Lippo Vanni, the Nativity School of Cavalini, the early paintings of Alegretto Nuzi, and a panel by Roberto Odensi have become the foundation for future studies; and his essay on some minor trecento Tuscan painters is an exemplary essay of attribution.
