The rugged, hardhitting Curtiss P-40, in various models, gave valiant service during World War II. Author-illustrator Lou Drendel presents a photographic tour of the P-40, especially the E model, in this Squadron/Signal 'Walk Around' volume from 1996.
The P-40, in its Tomahawk, Kittyhawk and Warhawk variants, held the line in 1941/42 until better USAAF fighters - P-38s, P-47s and P-51s - appeared. Though not the most produced model, the P-40E saw the most action. The bulk of the b&w and color photographs in 'Walk Around Number 8,' feature E models. The five pages of color profiles by Don Greer cover the entire P-36/P-40 line. The front/back-cover artwork depicting Colonel Robert L. Scott's 'Old Exterminator' P-40 was done by Drendel.
