Unlike their bomber compatriots on the eve of World War II, the fighter aircraft fielded by the French Air Force were a solid collection of first-class, modern designs. Alain Pelletier relates the pre-war development and combat history of the various French fighter designs in this Squadron/Signal publication.
French fighter units went to war flying a mixed bag of Morane-Saulnier, Potez, Dewoitine, Bloch and Caudron-Renault fighters along with U.S.-supplied Curtiss Hawks. Some aircraft were just entering service; others were established designs. As related in the text, some of these aircraft enjoyed great success against the Luftwaffe, one pilot even downing German super ace Werner Molders. Unfortunately it was all for naught.
Pelletier's text is complimented by over 90 black and white photographs, numerous plan-views and two pages of color profiles by Don Greer.
