Is Sex Education Effective? Sex education is designed to help young people gain the information, skills and motivation to make healthy decisions about sex and sexuality throughout their lives. There is a wide range of sex education programs which can be delivered by anyone from health professionals to parents and community members.

Worldwide, sex education programs vary greatly in their structure and approaches. Nonetheless, most forms of sex education have three main aims: to provide information about sexuality; to promote healthy attitudes about sexual relationships and sexual behaviour; and to promote safer sexual practices, including abstinence and the correct use of condoms.

Some recent work has questioned the effectiveness of sex education programs. Some people believe that if we teach young people about sex they will have more and earlier sex, and that governments should not spend money on ineffective programs. At the other end of the spectrum, there are those who support the continuation of sex education in efforts to promote a balanced approach to sexual knowledge and responsibility.

Sex education programs can be delivered by many different people and groups. Health professionals usually provide free, formal sex education to the general public. In countries where there is no government-funded sex education program, religious organizations are usually the most prominent providers of sex education in schools.

Sex education classes generally meet twice a week for about an hour each session, with one class for younger students and one for older students. There is a wide variety of school-based programs which sometimes include classroom discussions and role play, as well as lectures, films and presentations. These types of programs typically include material on anatomy, relationships, STD prevention, and the use of condoms. Some versions go further by including information on sexual dysfunction and preventing pregnancy.

Sex education can be taught in any context where children are present. This can include after-school programs, church groups and youth organisations, and residential care facilities.
To be effective, sex education programs must be age-appropriate (which means that they must engage children at a level appropriate for their developmental stages). However, subjects are often presented in a way which makes them appear more important than they really are. Inappropriate presentation of sexuality has been shown to make young people more likely to have negative attitudes towards sex.

This book reviews existing research on the effects of different types of sex education programs. The authors conclude that comprehensive education which includes information about relationships, contraception and risk-reduction has a positive impact on young people's sexual behaviour. They suggest that programs should be designed to avoid common weaknesses in order to ensure effectiveness, including an ideal structure and clear goals.
