SR-71 Blackbird

SR-71 Blackbird (Aircraft 32) By James Goodall
Publisher: Squadron/Signal 2003 | 82 Pages | ISBN: 0897474635 | PDF | 60 MB

Early in the Cold War, the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) needed a reliable wav to monitor developments within the Soviet Union. The solution was the Lockheed U-2. First flown in August of 1955, the U-2 was considered a short-term solution. Lockheed designer Kelly Johnson and other influential CIA members were convinced that its life span would be limited and successor would be needed to replace the 'Draeon Lady' even before her first flight. That requirement led to the A-12 and follow on Blackbirds - the YF-12 and SR-71. A CIA study made it apparent that the surest way to overcome the U-2's shortcomings was to design a totally new manned, air breathing platform that could retrain immune to the ever-increasing threats from Soviet anti-aircraft fire and Surface-to-Air Missiles (SAMs).
