You can quickly get carried away in a loop of spinning emotions, whether you're talking about family life, work, education, what you're going to do for dinner, what you said at the party last night or all of the above. We often ruminate about past events even to the extent that this leads to anxiety or we think about possible future scenarios.

When you practice paying attention to what is happening in your body and mind at this moment, you will find that many thoughts come up. Your mind may be wandering towards something that happened yesterday, meandering to your to-dodo list— your mind may seek to be wherever you are. But the wandering mind isn't something to be scared of, it's part of human nature, and it offers the magic moment for the essential piece of mindfulness practice — the piece that researchers believe leads to stronger, more resilient brains: the moment you realize your mind has drifted. Because if you can notice your mind wandering, then you can deliberately bring it back to the present moment. The more you do that, the more likely you'll be able to do it over and over again. And that beats walking around every day on autopilot (i.e. getting to your destination without remembering the drive, finding yourself in the bottom of a chip bag you just wanted to snack a little from it.

Mindfulness meditation is a form in mental training which can be helpful in such circumstances. This takes you and your feelings into the now, concentrating on the desires, perceptions, and experiences you are feeling "in the now." While it may first be difficult to calm your minds, over time and practice you can experience the benefits of meditation through mindfulness, including less stress and anxiety, and even a decrease in the symptoms of conditions such as IBS. Mindfulness techniques may vary, but mindfulness meditation generally involves breathing, mental imaging, body and mind awareness, and muscle and body relaxation and stress management. Meditation keeps our minds and emotions relaxed, happy and caring. Nevertheless, due to the common notion that it will make them feel calmer, more relaxed and less vulnerable to the consequences of everyday stress, most people who become involved in meditation are drawn to it. Meditation is not a new practice at all. It's also been around for hundreds of years, if not thousands, and a member of diverse cultures. Meditation initially had strong ties with religion not just Buddhism, with which people usually equate it but with Christian traditions as well.

Indeed, many people with different religious beliefs today like to embed meditation as a spiritual practice. Meditation has mostly moved away from its biblical and devotional origins, especially in Western countries, becoming more of a pragmatic exercise for mental health and generation. Mindfulness has branched out in the present moment as a set of practices which include concentrating on small details.

The goal of this book is to help a person stay grounded in the here and now and to de-escalate unwanted emotions or moods, such as anxiety episodes. People who engage with techniques of mindfulness and meditation frequently claim that these practices enable them to boost or maintain different aspects of their wellbeing.
