    Robert Gerhard es, sin duda, uno de los compositores españoles más relevantes del siglo xx; muchas veces es nombrado como la figura más importante del citado período junto a Falla. Sin embargo, tanto su biografía como su música son escasamente conocidas en nuestro país.

    La presente monografía reclama la atención sobre este gran compositor: ofrece una biografía rigurosa y actualizada, un análisis de su pensamiento estético e ideológico, y estudia la parte de su producción en la que Gerhard utilizó la Literatura como excusa creativa, dando lugar a algunas obras maestras como su cantata La Peste (basada en la novela de Camus).
