The book has two main parts. The first covers the author's introduction as a young schoolboy to a small piece of wreckage in the Essex coastal marshes. His early inquisitiveness leads to identification of the aircraft type and several years later to a recovery operation which retrieves the substanial remains from their muddy resting place. After a period of further investigation into the remains' identity, together with some initial preservation work, the aircraft is finally put on display at the Royal Air Force Museum, Hendon. The second part of the book attempts to recreate the sequence of events during the raid which led to the aircraft's loss.
