Norwegian Venture covers naval operations undertaken and fierce sea battles fought in Norwegian waters in the Spring of 1940, during the German campaign to invade and occupy Norway, in the teeth of a spirited defence by the small Norwegian armed forces and intervention by Britain and France. Many geographically separated and tactically unrelated actions were fought in the two months between 8th April and 8th June 1940, when the campaign ended with the occupation of Norway by Nazi Germany. The actions were savagely contested and desperately fought, with courage and heroism displayed on both sides.
Two previously classified official accounts, one British, one German, neither originally available to the public, form the core of this volume of the Britannia Naval Histories of WW2, together with a modern introduction and a section of contemporary photographs. Almost 85 years after the events, when former enemies have been allies for decades, these striking narratives show clearly what happened and why. They illustrate decisions taken, actions fought, lessons taught, some that were learned, and mistakes made. They shine a spotlight on history, without the refractions and reflections of hindsight.
