    Il est une colline sur les hauteurs de Naples qui domine une partie de la cité : Montedidio. Un quartier populaire partagé de ruelles étroites, théâtre du dernier opus d’Erri de Luca, décor de son récit initiatique. Le narrateur a tout juste treize ans quand il quitte l’école pour entrer chez Mast’Errico, comme apprenti menuisier. C’est une maigre paie qui s’ajoute le samedi dans cette humble famille de dockers. Dans la même boutique de menuiserie travaille don Rafaniello, un vieux juif bossu, cordonnier exceptionnel, rejeté sur les rives napolitaines dans la tourmente de la dernière guerre. En même temps que le narrateur vit son premier amour avec la jeune Maria sa voisine, se noue une amitié forte avec le cordonnier.
