American evolutionary psychologist, science writer Robert Wright • (RobertWright ) There is a book called "Why Buddhism is true." Wright proposed in the book,
Humans do not have a single self. There are at least 7 modules in the brain that take turns controlling our decisions.
Starting from this framework, let's take a look at a hot topic of motivation and success-self-control. The so-called "self-control" means being able to control oneself and do the "things to do" without being attracted by short-term temptations.
Traditionally speaking of "self-control" and "willpower", "reason" is used to defeat "emotion"-emotionally I want to eat sweets, but reason tells me that eating sweets is harmful to my body, so I refuse sweets. A well-known analogy is "the elephant and the man who rides the elephant". Human feelings are like elephants, and the reason is like a rider who drives elephants. What we have to do is to let the elephant rider control the elephant.
There is also a common saying: Human self-control is like a muscle. The more you exercise it, the stronger it will become.
I have written these statements before in my own articles. But today, they may all be out of date.
