    Masters of French Painting, 1850-1950
    Erich S. Hermann | 1958 | ISBN: N/A | English | 174 pages | PDF | 38.5 MB

An extensive collection of one century of French painting is offered here, at a price which is reasonable. The emphasis throughout this collection is on secular painting, which the editor apparently feels reached a new height in nineteenth century France, though its origins lay deep in the Renaissance. For this reason he includes an appendage of non-French works which go far back to Botticelli. Though the reproductions are clear, they are small, and if one were to judge by them alone, one might have the impression that Goya and Braque used colors of the same intensity. This is the result of indiscriminate touching up and a lack of attention to subtle distinction of color quality. Most of the illustrations of this book are to be found elsewhere which will not recommend it to the reader seeking new impressions and perceptions. However, this volume does provide a good source for a general study of French art of the period.
