Marine Biology For The Non-Biologist

Marine Biology For The Non-Biologist by Andrew Caine
English | February 20, 2017 | ISBN: 1520606435 | 108 pages | EPUB | 0.26 Mb

The first of three books in the series Marine Life by Andrew Caine, the second being 'Marine Ecology for the Non-Ecologist' the third ‘Aren’t Oceans Brilliant’ a book of amazing facts and importantly, explanations available November 2021.

The title says it all! Anyone from the age of 12 upwards will gain an understanding of the amazing life that exists beneath the oceanic waves. The book is crammed full of interesting facts and is written in a straightforward way making it easy for the layman to read, understand and enjoy.
Andrew has managed to produce a highly readable masterpiece which takes the reader on a magical and sometimes scary journey into the world of the planet’s marine life. He describes in fascinating detail and in a humorous and light-hearted manner the secret lives of our many different sea creatures—or beasties as he likes to call them. Uncovering their often-bizarre behaviour and sometimes scary predatory techniques and feeding habits which most people could barely imagine existed.
The book describes the major groups of animals present in the sea, the soft-bodied animals the cnidarians (jellyfish anemones, corals etc.), the crustaceans, (shrimps, crabs, lobsters, etc.) the molluscs, (the shellfish and squid etc.), the echinoderms (starfish, urchin etc). Detailing their life histories, reproductive strategies, adaptations, predator avoidance and how they grab a meal, plus much more. which collectively makes them successful as a species today. Then we examine coral reef architecture, hydrothermal vent biology, life in the polar sea and marine invertebrate toxins (what's going to kill you in the sea). The book is crammed with amazing facts that make this subject such a wonderful topic to understand.
Andrew’s work may well motivate people to take a more active interest in the study and preservation of our rich and diverse marine life.
Hi Everyone, I was asked to do a job share talk to a group of 16-year-old students in Indiana on the subject of –What’s it like to work in the field of Marine Biology. The students found it very enjoyable and informative, so much so that I have decided to offer this to any school free of charge. The talk lasts between 30 – 45 minutes long with Q&As. If you think this might be of interest to your students, please contact me for details and availability. Find out what is really like, the areas of study you can move into, challenges you face, the amazing people you meet! Then we move onto a project which started with me lying face down on the floor of an airport with 8 submachine guns pointed at me, 2 hours later I was on the plane, on to my destination. andrewmcaine@gmail.com
When I wrote this book I was hoping to not only instil knowledge and understanding to anyone but also help parents fan the flame of enthusiasm in their children as they are our future scientists. I came across this review which made my heart melt a little.
This marine biology book is an informative book not only for a non-expert adult like me. Observing that my daughter likes it and learns from it, it’s one of the most suitable marine biology books for 12-year-olds. The things written in this book are realistic and out of factual, scientific ideas.
A book doesn’t have to be complex when imparting knowledge. That is why you will find this book is an ideal example. Even though some parts have limited illustrations, it doesn’t matter as it’s well-written.
I still have a good time reading it. Since I occasionally scuba dive, I want to learn more about life under the sea. Unfortunately, only a little is known about things underwater. That’s why it excites me whenever I find out something new about it.
I’ve noticed that my daughter and I have become more interested in marine biology since this book occupied its place in our small library at home. It’s usually included in our conversation so it’s part of our bonding time.
