Tonio Kröger is a short novel by Thomas Mann, a German novelist, social critic, philanthropist, Nobel Literature Prize laureate of 1929, a brother of a radical writer Heinrich Mann.
Tonio Kröger’s main theme is 'artist's escape from reality'. The book describes a story of a son of a north German merchant and an Italian artist. He inherited qualities from both sides of his family. As a child little Tonio experiences conflicting feelings for the bourgeois people around him. He feels both superior to them in his insights and envious of their innocent vitality.
This conflict continues into Tonio's adulthood when he becomes a famous writer.
