Description
Dr. Parr teaches you the foundations of how emotions are created in your mind, and how to use a simple formula to take control of these stressful, anxious thoughts and to cultivate a mind of peace. Anxiety is always a future-oriented emotion. We all have different fears, but the pattern of thinking behind Anxiety is the same for every single one of us. No matter what you are anxious about, all Anxiety follows this pattern:‘What if’ is essentially fear of the future: projecting our mind into a future that doesn’t exist and may never occur. The ‘What If’ component has to do with the story that you make up in your mind. “What if my car doesn’t start or I get in an accident?” “What if my boyfriend dumps me?” “What if my boss fires me?” This part creates at most a minor concern, until you add the other two elements. What if statements are not a bad thing when taken by themselves. They can serve as a safety net to keep us from taking unnecessary and harmful risks. It’s just problem solving. You only get the feeling of Anxiety when you add the next two parts of the equation. The ‘Awfulizing’ happens when you take that event and alter it through your perception. “If my car doesn’t start or I get in an accident, it would be truly awful,” “It would be terrible if my boyfriend didn’t love me anymore!” or, “If my boss fired me that would be catastrophic!” Every time you say that something is awful, you are taking something that is unpleasant or inconvenient to you and exaggerating the unpleasantness until it is so universally bad it simply shouldn’t exist. Awful doesn’t exist except in your mind—you created it by defining it as such. The final component of the formula for anxiety, “I can’t stand it,” is the thought that follows the Awfulizing. Not only would it be terrible if any of the events above happened, but if they did, you wouldn’t be able to stand it. You would fall apart if you lost your job, your boyfriend or girlfriend, or if you were in an accident. You know this isn’t true because you’ve withstood every other unpleasant thing that has happened up until this moment in time; you’ve lost other boyfriends or girlfriends, other jobs, and had accidents, but if you’re reading this, you’re still alive. Therefore, you have stood everything that has ever happened to you and you will until memento mori, the moment of death. And who knows? Aristotle said that this might be our finest moment—the moment of final liberation and freedom. Now that you know what you are feeling, how do you stop feeling that way? This process can be broken down into two simple steps: confronting the thought process that causes Anxiety, and then confronting the situation you believe is causing your Anxiety.
