New Perspectives on Colour Theory - Colour Superpowers And An Eye For Colour

    What you'll learn

Identify different colour theory strategies for combining colours

Exploit the relationship between colour theory and the mechanisms of human colour vision

Modify palettes of colour to achieve a specific visual impact

Create original palettes of colour to use in professional or personal projects

Understand the consequences of introducing new colours into an existing scheme

Spot and correct discordant colours within existing schemes

Support lifelong learning by describing and analysing palettes of colour

Develop a more complex 3-dimensional understanding of relationships between colours

Students should come ready to engage themslves fully in a fun-filled training on colour

    Requirements

No prior knowledge is necessary, all lessons are delivered from first principles

Basic computer skills are needed to join the class exercise. These include uploading images, adding text, using a colour picker tool from a chosen software such as PowerPoint, Keynote, Word, Photoshop, Procreate, InDesign

Curiosity: a desire to learn more about colour and to apply this knowledge practically in the real world

An interest in design, and interior design specifically: the majority of examples in this class come from interior design practice

    Description

Some people have an instinct for colour - an eye for colour - the great news is: this 'natural gift' can be learned!Standard colour theory only gets us so far, to develop an eye for colour we need to see colour from a different perspective: a three dimensional perspective. This class explains how our eyes respond to colour, and how to exploit this knowledge effortlessly. It covers the basics of colour theory and then layers on new ways of working with colour, colour that exists within related families. It shows that:we master colour when we confidently modify its lightness or darkness, its intensity and vibrancy, and by understanding where all colours originate from on the colour wheelit's too easy to clash colours and mismatch when we don't recognise family likenesses and colour 'DNA', we need to develop our sensitivity to thisThis class covers:Human colour vision and how this relates to colour theoryStrategies of colour theory including complementary, analogous, monochromatic, triadic, and tetradic schemesHues, tints, tones, and shadesValue and chromaNuance3D colour models versus 2D colourColour familiesNeutrals and greysColour palette analysis and designThese lessons will help you to build a new relationship with colour. The principles shared here can be applied to any creative project involving colour however in this class most of the examples given relate to interior design. We will explore the relationships between colours that make them more or less likely to harmonise, and ways of modifying colour to achieve a desired visual impact, or dramatic effect. The class is suited to beginners and intermediate level students; once you have completed this class you will feel confident working with all colour, from the subtlest greys to the boldest hues.
