The goal of the exercises in the workbook is to facilitate the acquisition of fundamental grammatical skills in Japanese, including basic grammatical and sentence patterns, vocabulary items, and particle use, along with other characteristic features of the language. In addition, a number of discourse and composition exercises provide the student with ample opportunity to express his or her own ideas and opinions, or talk about him-/herself, as the situation demands. As with the text, the workbook recognizes the importance of mastering the written language as well. To help the student along, a larger, easy to read typeface is used for the beginning lessons. Directions for each exercise, given in English at the beginning of the book, are later given in both English and Japanese, and towards the end, almost exclusively in Japanese. Answers to the exercises are printed at the back of the workbook, except for those exercises asking for students' own thoughts or opinions, etc.
