Description
The IELTS Academic Listening test consists of 30 minutes of audio and 40 questions across four sections of increasing difficulty, with recordings of conversations and monologues in social and academic settings. You must answer questions while listening to the recordings only once, with additional time at the end to transfer answers to a separate sheet for paper tests or to review for computer-based tests.
Test Structure
Duration:
30 minutes of audio playback and questions, plus time to transfer answers.
Sections:
Four parts with 10 questions each.
Recordings:
You will hear four different recordings.
Section 1: A conversation between two people in an everyday social context.
Section 2: A monologue by one person in an everyday social context.
Section 3: A conversation among up to four people in an educational or training context.
Section 4: A monologue on an academic subject, such as a university lecture.
Question Types
You will answer 40 questions based on the recordings, which can include:
Multiple choice
Matching information, headings, or features
Sentence, summary, note, table, diagram, or flow-chart completion
Filling in blanks with no more than a specific number of words and/or a number
During the Test
Listen only once:Each recording is played only once.
Time to read questions:You get time before each recording to read the questions.
Answer transfer:For paper-based tests, you have 10 minutes at the end to copy your answers onto the answer sheet. For computer-based tests, you have two extra minutes to review and check your answers.
Skills AssessedThe test assesses your ability to:
Understand the main ideas of the recordings.
Follow the development of ideas and arguments.
Understand detailed information, opinions, and attitudes of the speakers.
