Professor Wittkower's Mathews Lectures describe the aesthetic problems facing architects and theorists in seventeenth-century Italy when they contemplated continuation and completion of major gothic structures and when they considered gothic architecture in general. Four chapters are devoted to a detailed description of the continuation of the facade of the cathedrals of Milan and Florence and the interior facade of the cathedral of Bologna. The fifth and last chapter is devoted to a discussion of the ideas and work of Borromini and Guarini, the two seventeenth-century architects whose writings and works show most clearly the fusion of renaissance/classical and gothic principles.
