“Still, I would like to thank you on behalf of all our staff. I would also like to offer you a chance to buy anything you want from my boutique. Anything at all. Once you come we would attend to you.”
Sergeant Kelly grinned. “No, please, sir. Don’t worry about that.”
“Ma’am, I really insist. Please come and shop in my boutique anytime you are free. Okay?”
She glanced at Conrad. “Okay. What do you think, partner?”
Conrad shrugged. “I don’t see why not? He is only appreciating us for a job well done. There is no harm in that. Or is there?”
“No, not at all.” She turned to the elderly man. “Okay, sir. I and my partner would be back when we are free.”
Once the criminal was put into the back of the police car, they both got in front and drove off to the police station. At the station, the criminal was formally booked and placed into custody.
“So I am now your partner?” Conrad asked while they were making their report.
“Of course you are. Any rookie that can overpower a criminal as fast as you did shouldn’t be a mere rookie. You should be promoted already.”
Conrad laughed. “That is really funny, Sergeant.”
“I am serious. I am going to make that recommendation to the Chief inside this report.”
Conrad shrugged. “You are the superior officer. You know how best to handle all that.”
“Yes, I do. And by the way, Conrad?”
“Yeah?”
“We are going to shop in that old man’s boutique.”
“I am sorry. Did you say we?”
“Yes. You and me.”
He shook his head. “No, I think I’ll pass.”
“Why?”
“I don’t really need to do any shopping.”
“Really? And you think he would be pleased that only I came back to take him up on his free gift to us?”
“I really don’t –”
“Okay. I get it. You don’t want to go, right?”
He shook his head. “No. Not really.”
“Then escort me, Conrad.”
“What?”
“Yes. Come along with me. Who knows, maybe you would be able to help me make some good selections of the clothes that I want.”
“I am sorry. Are you saying that I should follow you to help you choose the clothes that you want to buy?”
“Yes.”
“But you are a woman.”
“And so?”
He rubbed the back of his neck. “I don’t have much knowledge about what it is that you women like to wear.”
“Get out of here. Are you trying to tell me that you are not hooked up with any woman?”
He shook his head. “No.”
“Oh. Are you into guys then?”
“No.”
“Then what are you? A lover of animals?”
“Sergeant Kelly, please don’t pull my legs.”
“Then tell me what the problem is?”
He shrugged. “I am just there. Alone for now. Too busy trying to become a cop.”
