Published in the 70's, this book gives an excellent overview of events leading up to Chinese communism, interesting details of early triumphs and disasters, as well as discussions about the Korean conflict, invasion of Tibet and the border disputes with India and the USSR. Written shortly after Nixon's ground-breaking visit to China in February 1972, it does an outstanding job of helping western readers understand China's past and present views of soldiers, soldiering and the conflicts within and without that have shaped the People's Liberation Army.
