Driven by the increasing prevalence of cardiovascular (CV) risk factors, particularly dyslipidemia, hypertension and diabetes, the number of patients eligible for CV therapies is increasing, a trend that does not appear to be set to diminish over 2008–14.
Hypertension was the most common CV risk factor across the Asian region, with an estimated prevalence rate of 15.9% in 2007. The prevalence rate associated with hypertension is forecast to increase to 17.4% across the region in 2014.
China and India had the highest prevalence of hypertension sufferers. China had approximately 191 million people who suffer from hypertension in 2007, with an estimated prevalence rate of 14.4%. This was followed by India, which had an estimated prevalent population of 184 million and a prevalence rate of 16.4%.
