A History Lesson for myself and others on: BREXIT Stupidity for the New Generation. This book covers the issues about BREXIT as developed through a petition that the author ran over 2018 to 2019. On 31 January 2020 the UK left the EU. Well sort of. No-one really knows what to expect but the mood of many is dour. We know that the short lived UK ex-chancellor, Sajid Javid, will not align with the EU rules and regulation thereby making trade with the EU worse. But services are the core of the UK economy and who knows, despite little discussion, they might save the UK yet, even though the UK will not be in the single market nor in its customs union. The new Government promises to restore the NHS and assist the poor. BREXIT will make the country poorer and such promises will therefore be hard to keep.
The December 2019 election was a disaster with the first past the post election system showing it was not fit for purpose with Remainers winning more votes but not gaining seats and, again, the 1.5 million Brits living in the EU were ignored. The UK ends up with a populist PM beholden to the impeached President of the United States. Our once might democracy with its search for the truth, justice and the rule of law remains, happily, albeit severely weakened. The EU itself will survive but it has also been sadly shaken as one of its strongest members leaves.
I start the New Year of 2020 like the proverbial bear with a sore head as the political events see democracy sadly shaken, and the rule of law weakened. Only Russia seems happy with all of this but I fear for the future as the UK will break up, its economy likely to crash with a slogan dominated Prime Minister and then Ukraine remains partially occupied, the Kurds forsaken by their former friends and key international treaties such as climate change and nuclear proliferation in tatters.
I hope events will prove me wrong as my greatest fear is that I may be right!
