Casting new eyes on a familiar story–the Middle East is Polk's area of expertise–the author synthesizes a fluent account of British America from colonization to the imperial crisis of the 1760s and 1770s. Not restricted, until relating those decades, to political and military affairs, Polk ensures that readers understand the tactile experience of colonization by detailing the risky ocean crossing, whether one emigrated voluntarily from Europe or forcibly from Africa. Proceeding in a chiefly topical manner, Polk explains the friction between colonials and Indians, the establishment of economies both slave-based and commerce-driven, and, crucially, traditions of colonial autonomy that predated by generations the outbreak of armed rebellion in 1775. Until the French and Indian War, the mother country was more memory than physical presence, and in covering her attempt to recoup the fiscal costs of her victorious army, Polk most resembles a traditional history narrator. His best effect is explaining the British case in the 1760s, rational in its own compass but deeply irritating to colonists. A fine popular history of America's origin.
