Suiboku-ga is also called “Sumi-e” in a broad sense, and is called “Ink painting” abroad.
Suiboku-ga were introduced from China to Japan during the Kamakura period.
After that, it developed its spirituality in Japan and passed on many masterpieces to us today.
There is a deep spirituality in “Shorinzu Byobu” of HASEGAWA Tohaku and “Koboku Meigekizu” of MIYAMOTO Musashi.
In modern society, which is filled with a lot of information and colors, black and white world of Sumi-e still attracts our hearts, and has received a lot of interest and praise from people overseas.
"Hue, lightness, and saturation" are the three elements of color, but monotone Sumi-e is expressed only by "lightness".
Though Sumi-e has only one element, it’s comparable to watercolors and oil paintings.
Even though there is no color variation, the viewers can feel a colorful world in a single ink color depending on the shade of the ink and the way it’s used.
Depending on the heart of the viewers, Sumi-e looks different.
Sumi-e may be called a painting you can feel the color in your heart.
I would like you to experience Sumi-e in your own way.
I hope that this book will give you some interest in Sumi-e world.
