The movie “The Help” was a touching period piece based on the book with the same name, by Kathryn Stockett.

Being set in the South in the 1960s, we see a time of racial and political tension. We see it from the point of view of someone inside private homes, both African-American and white. Indeed, the main characters, Minnie and Aibileen, see it from inside both levels of social striation.

Food themes from both these types of homes are seen throughout the film, and it’s difficult to ignore.

Chocolate pie has probably never raised so many eyebrows and guffaws on film ever before. So if you haven’t watched it, do so. It’s essential viewing.

Sweet treats were a big part of Southern culture. So you’ll find no shortage of decadent desserts here. With four kinds of pies, cakes galore, and cooling sweet drinks, there is guaranteed to be something that will take your fancy.

Want a lighter dessert? Whether you love it or hate it, ambrosia salad is also on the menu in this book.

The African-American influence is prominent in this book. Ingredients and cooking styles brought over from Africa are celebrated in this book. What would life be with Cajun spice, right?

Give me a fluffy biscuit with gravy for breakfast anytime. And if you toast my BLT in bacon grease… well, the deal is sealed. Cheesy Shrimp and Grits will complete a day of food seduction.

While it might seem like rib-sticking richness, let’s remember how great food can make life worth living. Enjoy!
