Most physicists don't have much of a philosophic streak, so they don't want to wonder what they're researching. Many theorists typically do not have a technical education and history to wax lyrical and come to terms with modern physics. Either physicists or philosophers, they prefer not to advertise themselves too far away from the traditional model box of their descipline. It's not usually considered a wise career move, particularly if you're up and running on the academic path. As for me, I have no academic career to harm or kill, so I'm going to mix physics and philosophy and think way, way, way out of the traditional model box. It will be quantum (particle) physics 'explained' by appeal to the Simulated (Virtual Reality) Universe scenario.
