    An investigation of the sources used by Plutarch in the life of Artaxerxes is attended with much difficulty. Though one has little doubt after reading the Life that he will have to do mainly with Ctesias and Dinon, yet the meagre excerpts from Ctesias (in Photius) on the one hand offer little, and the fragments of Dinon on the other almost no opportunity of making a comparison. With regard to Heraclides, who is once mentioned in the
    Life, we are still worse off. As to Xenophon, a compari- son only proves that what Plutarch has from him in the Artaxerxes was taken principally at second hand through some other source.
