Taken from Memoirs, A Lucky Red Lion is the true story of a Marine aviator, then Captain Arch Ratliff, Jr., while serving with Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 363, The Lucky Red Lions, in Vietnam from November 1966 through November 1967. Captain Ratliff flew over 1,400 combat missions, was shot down five times, and his aircraft took almost 100 hits from enemy fire in his first 13-month tour in Vietnam. Emotions of fear, excitement, apprehension, consternation, and humor are unashamedly shared in the conduct and execution of helicopter missions flown by Marines supporting Marines in Vietnam. Tactics, command and control, and the Marine ground units being supported are explained so that any adult, regardless of military knowledge, can understand and comprehend the action.
The Lucky Red Lions were the first and most northerly based aviation unit in Vietnam near the DMZ, where it dealt with the North Vietnam Army in a conventual war. From KheSanh in the northwest to Dong Ha in the northeast corners of the country, Captain Ratliff and the members of the Squadron took part in the battles of Con Tien, the Hill Fights at KheSanh, and deployment aboard ship in the northern part of the country. Additionally, missions were flown at Marble Mountain, Ky Ha, and Phu Bai. This is the exciting story of a young Marine captain in combat developing his leadership skills and launching his service of 26 years in the Marine Corps.
