    A la fin du 19e siècle, la structure atomique de la matière n'était pas démontrée, et était loin d'être généralement acceptée.
    Les attaques contre Boltzmann ont été en partie motivées par sa croyance aux atomes, et ont fort probablement conduit à son suicide.

    La grande entreprise de la vie de Boltzmann a été d'essayer de comprendre la thermodynamique dans le cadre de l'hypothèse atomique (l'idée que la matière est constituée d'un nombre énorme de "particules" animées d'une "folle agitation"), en faisant ce qu'on appelle maintenant de la mécanique statistique.

    Et c'est précisément Jean Perrin mit en évidence expérimentalement les atomes, en 1908.

    Jean Perrin obtint le Prix Nobel de physique en 1926, fut sous-secrétaire d'Etat à la Recherche dans le gouvernement de Léon Blum, et créa le Palais de la Découverte en 1937 et le CNRS en 1939. Ses cendres ont été transférées au Panthéon en 1948.
