The Language of Memory in a Crosslinguistic Perspective (Human Cognitive Processing) by Mengistu Amberber
    Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing Co | Number Of Pages: 284 | Publication Date: 2007-11-14 | ISBN-10: 9027223750 | PDF | 1 Mb

This volume explores the language of memory in a cross-linguistic perspective. The term memory is to be understood broadly as the “capacity to encode, store, and retrieve information” (cf. Baddeley 1999), but also includes the inability to retrieve information (e.g. ‘to forget’).
At the outset, the relationship between memory and language is intuitively clear in so far as language is one of the most effi cient media for encoding experience. For example, psychologists have known that, controlling for ‘initial memorability’, talking about a past experience will signifi cantly enhance the memory for that experience.
