This book is an expanded amalgamation of several sets of Class Notes of M.Sc and M.Phil courses on Commutative Algebra and Algebraic Geometry that I have taught over the past two decades at the University of Hyderabad. These notes in- clude sketchy versions by auditors D. Krishnaiah (M.Sc-1980); PLN Varma (M.Sc- 1984, M.Phil-1985), G. Sri Nagesh (M.Phil-1989), M.S. Datt (M.Sc-1994, M.Phil- 1995), and more systematic versions by U.K. Anandavardhanan (B.Sc-1996) ([76]) and N. Nagamani (M.Sc-1997). An additional set of notes was prepared for my UGC National Lectures given at various venues in the country during 1990-91, part of which formed the survey article ([75]). All these and othcr such disorganised raw material (spanning diverse topics at different levels of expertise) were in cold storage for a very long time, simply expecting publication of an introductory text by better experts in the field. With no sign in sight of such a Ml\NNA forthcoming, I have finally ventured to complete this horne work.
