    Das Schulsystem der Bundesrepublik Deutschland befindet sich derzeit in einer ausgeprägten Modernisierungsphase. Die wissenschaftliche Auseinandersetzung mit diesen Veränderungen steht allerdings noch ganz am Beginn. Dieser Band der Reihe 'Educational Governance' nimmt dies zum Anlass, die erziehungswissenschaftliche und interdisziplinäre Forschung zum Thema erstmalig im Zusammenhang darzustellen. Zudem wird am Beispiel des Modellvorhabens 'Selbstständige Schule NRW' eine eigene Studie über die im Modellvorhaben veränderten Steuerungsstrukturen vorgestellt. Es zeigt sich, dass mit regionalen Steuergruppen neue Akteure in der Schulgovernance implementiert werden konnten und dass ihr Steuerungshandeln maßgeblich von den regionalen Rahmenbedingungen abhängt.
