    Es sind kleine Szenen, die Sayed Kashua einfängt, um eine zutiefst gespaltene Gesellschaft zu beschreiben und die absurde Situation auszuloten, in der Israelis heute leben. Etwa wenn der arabische Kolumnist der Tageszeitung Haaretz sich zum doppelten Preis beim Juden das Haar schneiden lässt, einen dezenten Citroën anschafft und das Auto von innen und außen wäscht, um Sicherheitskontrollen unbehelligt zu passieren. Oder wenn die kleine Tochter sich versehentlich auf Arabisch bedankt und der Wachmann im Einkaufscenter sofort auf Hebräisch den Ausweis verlangt. Selbstironisch, mitunter auch melancholisch erzählt Kashua vom Fremdsein im eigenen Land. »Ich habe versucht, die Realität mit Hilfe von Worten zu überleben.« Doch wo die Sprache nicht mehr trägt, wo die Hoffnung nicht mehr da ist, das Zusammenleben von Juden und Arabern durch Schreiben zu verändern, sieht Kashua keinen anderen Ausweg, als sein Land, »diesen verfluchten, geliebten Ort«, für immer zu verlassen.
