This volume owes its existence to the generous help and enthusiastic encouragement of so many people over the past four years. It began to germinate in 2008 in preparation for a graduate seminar I taught that fall at the University of Arizona. Over the previous summer, I had begun to read widely in order to choose for my students the most thought-provoking articles on medieval women as artists and patrons. It was an eye-opening experience. Once I began to look outside my own area of research— Spanish architecture in the central Middle Ages—I discovered a wealth of scholarship addressing the multiple ways women were involved with medieval art and architecture. In fact, I was surprised to learn how much work was being done on the topic until I recognized that most publications seemed to follow a similar pattern to my own: each is well known by specialists in her/his areas, but few make a deep impact on the field of art history as a whole.
