Janda's monograph uses cognitive semantics to describe two Slavic cases. Lucidly written and with a wealth of examples from both Czech and Russian, this book fulfills two roles it is both a well-organized analysis of a linguistic problem and a compelling argument for Slavists as to the importance of cognitive grammar as a research tool. The author is at her strongest in laying out her essential arguments that cognitive approaches provide theoratically and intuitivelly satisfying descriptions of case categories as a whole and of semantic and symactic uses of case, and that they provide ample mechaninisms to explain differences in case meaning between two languages.
