There are so many people to thank that I had to divide them into three categories: those who actually studied CES. those who stood fast against the evil forces of government tyrants who were hell-bent on removing CES from the American pharmaceutical industry's competition, and of course, those who helped with this book.
First of all I must applaud the courage of those physicians and psychologists that began the journey into CES research in the 1960s. Technology was not dominating our lives back then so one can only imagine that their reference must have been limited to shock therapy (which CES most certainly is not!) and images of Frankenstein. Of all those whose work appears in these pages none can compare to psychiatrist Saul H. Rosenthal who virtually alone described the qualitative experiences of CES. Without doubt, experimental psychologist Ray B. Smith taught us the most about CES. and established the tine foundations of CES science as a labor of love. Other great contributors are psychologists Michael Heffernan. Mary Ellen O'Connor. Stephen J. Overcash. and Marshall D. Voris; physicians Eric Braverman. Allen Childs. and Margret A. Patterson: and dentists Elliott J. Alpher. Michael Lerner. and Reid Winick among many others. With these are the thousands of forward-thinking clinicians who use CES in daily practice to provide their patients with a far safer, and usually much more effective alternative to dings.
CES would no longer exist in the United States if not for the brave efforts of Electromedical Products International. Inc. (EPII) led by President Tracey B. Kirsch. She alone had the courage to stand up against the Food and Drug Administration who broke their own rules every step of the way in an incredibly biased attempt to deprive Americans of this therapy. Mrs. Kirsch was assisted in this task by attorneys Jonathan W. Emord of Emord and Associates. Larry R. Pilot. Ami M. Begley and Daniel Jarcho of McKenna & Cuneo. and Harry G. Preuss. M.D. Professor of Medicine and Pathology at Georgetown University Medical Center and science consultant to EPII. But this heroic effort also required the support of dozens of legislators who asked the FDA to explain themselves. The Honorable Joe Barton. Chair of the FDA Oversight Committee being most notably among them. Over 100 physicians, dentists, psychologists, therapists, and patients also helped by lobbying legislators to keep CES available to Americans.
Finally, the preparation of this book was encouraged and helped along the way by many people, but no one put more effort into, or stayed up more nights, editing, crunching numbers for the post marketing survey, and helping to lay out this book than my close colleague. Richard A. Floyd. Vice President of Electromedical Products International. Inc. Mr. Floyd could rightfully take a place as the fourth author.
To all those who use CES. I salute you for contributing to a humane therapy that has saved some lives, and certainly improved the quality-of-life of millions of people worldwide. We could all use a little CES from time-to-time. Its use should be mandated for government bureaucrats.
