This book stems from our passionate belief in the need for students to develop skills in learning as well as knowledge. It is the book we wished we had when we were students because the ability to find relevant and credible information is an essential skill, and this is especially so in a world now dominated by information technology. This book is for students in all academic disciplines and is a companion to John Germov's (1996) Get Great Marks for your Essays (Sydney: Allen & Unwin). Both books aim to provide the essential skills that students require but aren't necessarily told about. We have written this book both as lecturers who deal with students and as ex-students ourselves; as such, we appreciate the need for all students to have a quick reference guide to finding great information fast.
We would like to thank the following people: Jane a'Beckett for her unfailing assistance with many aspects of this book; Steve Campitelli for his marvellous illustrations; Jane Potter, for finding information for us; Jan Williams, for proofreading chapters; our publisher, Elizabeth Weiss, who first suggested we write this book and provided us with constant support and encouragement; Marj Kibby and Marcus Smith for their insightful comments on the web chapter; and Peter Diplaris for suggestions on using people.
