Research on agroforestry as an adaptation to climate change and as buffer against climate variability is in the process of evolving. Trees in agroforestry farms improve soil fertility through control of erosion, maintenance of soil organic matter and physical properties, increased N, extraction of nutrients from deep soil horizons, promotion of more closed nutrient cycling, and ameliorating micro-climate in such a way that it favors crop growth and production.
There is a long list of books that have been published over the last thirty years or so on various aspects of science and art of agroforestry throughout the world. In the present edited book "Agroforestry Research Developments" JC Dagar and JC Tewari have attempted to compile range of information from anecdotal to modern agroforestry systems adopted throughout world and the potentials of agroforestry for increased food production, food and nutrition securities and livelihood improvement, restoration of degraded lands, and role in mitigation of climate change through carbon sequestration and improvement in environment.
This book would be very useful for researchers, agroforestry practitioners, foresters, planners, development officials and students who are concerned with advances in agroforestry research and development.
