    100 Sideways Miles

    Smith Andrew "100 Sideways Miles"
    Simon & Schuster Books for Young Readers | English | September 2, 2014 | ISBN: 1442444959 | 288 pages | azw, epub, lrf, mobi | 1,6 mb

Andrew Smith has created yet another unique look at coming of age with 100 Sideways Miles, and I for one am very glad he keeps tackling this subject. He once again achieves a truly authentic teenage voice that is witty, intelligent, and decidedly different. I was immediately charmed by Finn, the young man at the center of this tale, and found his theories of life and concerns about where he comes from to be endearing and very compelling.

100 Sideways Miles is filled with funny, raunchy, and poignant moments that keep the pages turning at a fast clip. The language is raw thanks to Finn's friend Cade, but the emotions are true and the action when it comes is both unexpected and satisfying. As a parent of a young teen, I could appreciate Finn's honesty, and appreciated the author's portrayal of his loving, supportive parents. The trust shown in the relationship was great. Finn's friend Cade is the perfect example of the friend every kid would love to have and every parent loves to hate. Dialogues between Cade and Finn were often hilarious, and their devotion to each other truly moving. It was Finn's relationship with Julia that provided many of the most touching moments, and helped Finn on his way to finally figuring out some important things.

This was a great read that will appeal to high school students just learning how they can control their future and take responsibility for their own destiny. 100 Sideways Miles is entertaining, illuminating, and flat out hilarious. If you've never read this author, this is a very good place to start. Memorable characters, intelligent writing, and a truly fascinating world view make this a must read.
