Thomas De Quincey - opium-eater, celebrity journalist, and professional doppelgänger - is embedded in our culture. Modelling his character on Coleridge and his sensibility on Wordsworth, De Quincey took over the poet's former cottage in Grasmere and turned it into an opium den.
