A great debut novel. The author, Joe Gannon has a terrific voice, and his character, Captain Ajax Montoya, grabbed me from the first page. He's an honorable man trying to make it in a world that has gone out of control. I read a lot of mysteries, and this is one of the best I've read recently. It has the intricate plotting of a police procedural, a dash of a ghost story, and a terrific look at the politics and double dealings of 1980's Nicaragua. I hope this is a series because I'll be back for the next book. Fans of John Burdett and Colin Cotterill should take notice!
